The Cost of a Poor Recruitment Process for Candidates and the Employer

Recruitment is always a challenge, even for the biggest firms. If you’re a small business looking to compete against larger companies with massive resources and strong employer brands, then it really can be daunting.

if 93% of employers are hiring this year, and confidence in finding the right candidate might well be low, how do you make sure that you can hire great talent? A good recruitment process is absolutely vital! It’s how you attract the right people to your company. They should have all the right skills and perfectly match the company culture you’ve worked hard to cultivate.

So, if you’re trying to attract the right type of people that will accelerate growth, then it’s critical that the recruitment and candidate experience process is responsive, inclusive, and robust to make sure you are recruiting the right people. When you add up the thousands spent on long searches and the thousands lost on diminished productivity (plus the negative impact on team morale), the cost of the wrong hire is significant!

It’s best, then, to make sure your recruitment process will attract the perfect employees for your business. Luckily, there are several ways of doing this.

First, you should always try your best to make the entire process as transparent as possible. Your company and the potential candidate should be always on the same page. Make sure the potential employee fully understands the interview and hiring process. Also, your interviewer should be open and honest about the company and a true reflection of your company’s culture.

No one likes being left waiting, so make sure your hiring process is efficient and timely. If you have a full understanding of the job requirements, you shouldn’t need to spend weeks assessing and testing. Save time and respect your candidates’ time, too.

Finally, make sure you offer a competitive salary. If you can’t match those of larger firms, then use all the benefits you can, such as flexible time, hybrid work and lifestyle gifts like gym memberships. Anything that will make you stand out.

As for what doesn’t work, misrepresenting the job or company to quickly fill a role will just lead to low employee retention as candidates realise the role isn’t as advertised — a costly mistake indeed.
